TPS Weldtech supports the Seagreen wind energy project with global energy group

Project Scope

Located 27km from the coast of Angus in the North Sea, the Seagreen Offshore Wind Farm is Scotland’s largest, and the worlds deepest fixed bottom offshore wind farm, with 114 wind turbines and the capacity to deliver 1.1GW of clean, renewable energy. The installation project started at Global Energy Group’s Port of Nigg facility near Inverness, and was completed in October 2023. A project of significant scale – the outcome was 114 Vesta 10MW turbines, mounted on giant steel superstructures over 100m above the waves, combining to provide enough green energy to power more than 1.6 million homes, making a significant contribution to Scotland’s net zero ambitions. Global Energy Group’s.

Port of Nigg

Port of Nigg facility served as the main location for offloading, storage, and mobilisation on the project. As the pre-assembly and marshalling facility for the Wind Turbine Generators, the major components were delivered, assembled, and tested onsite, with TPS welding equipment used in the mobilisation and demobilisation of the huge jacket foundations, the massive 2,000t steel superstructures that are anchored into the seabed to support the Wind Turbines.

The Challenge

As a large-scale offshore project it presented multiple challenges. These included the demand for high-performance reliable welding solutions capable of supporting multiple operators to boost efficiency and tight project deadlines dependent on reliable and readily available rental equipment. Other considerations were the strict adherence to health and safety regulations, and the logistics of supporting large-scale welding & gouging operations within the restricted space of a marine fabrication environment at the Port of Nigg facility.

Our Solution

To support Global Energy Group’s skilled team from start to finish of the 18 month project, TPS delivered an array of rental equipment tailored to the Seagreen project’s requirements. This included Inverter MIG Welding Packs, Power Generators, Welder Generators, Compressors and Lighting Towers.

Equipment supplied by TPS WeldTech was used in the mobilisation and demobilisation of the jacket foundations in preparation for marshalling and loadout to the offshore project location. Jacket foundations are the 3-legged, 2,000t, 95m tall steel structures on which the Wind Turbine Generators are supported, with the jacket’s legs anchored to the sea floor, in this case up to a record depth of 58.6m.

In addition to supplying the equipment for Global Energy Group to carry out their welding operations to the project requirements, TPS provided ongoing support, with our dedicated service engineers visiting the site regularly to maintain all rental equipment throughout the project duration.

The Outcome

TPS WeldTech supplied reliable welding equipment along with dedicated engineers to maintain it, assisting Global Energy Group to successfully deliver the Seagreen project in line with stringent offshore quality standards.

Our efficient and reliable rental solutions played a vital role in keeping this large-scale offshore project running smoothly, our location on the West Coast of Scotland allowing us to be agile with project requirements of the Inverness location.
